My initial plan was to meticulously curate a baby registry post during my third trimester, but honesty demands I admit I simply wasn’t in the right headspace at the time. However, I’ve found that the delay was a blessing in disguise. Instead of hypothetical recommendations, I now have the invaluable experience of having used countless baby products. This post isn’t about what I *thought* I’d need; it’s a heartfelt compilation of my absolute favorite, tried-and-true newborn essentials that genuinely made those first crucial months smoother, more comfortable, and simply more enjoyable for our family.
Becoming a new parent comes with a steep learning curve, and the sheer volume of baby gear on the market can be overwhelming. Sleep, or the lack thereof, is often the most talked-about aspect of newborn life. Establishing a calm and consistent sleep environment can make a world of difference for both baby and parents. Here are the items that were instrumental in helping Jett (and us!) catch those precious z’s.
The Hatch Rest Sound Machine & Night Light. Investing in quality sleep tools is something I highly recommend. We initially bought a very inexpensive sound machine, only for it to break within a week. Upgrading to the Hatch Rest was one of the best decisions we made. This smart device is more than just a sound machine; it also functions as a customizable night light and even an “ok-to-wake” clock as your child grows. The variety of soothing sounds, from white noise to gentle lullabies, combined with adjustable light colors and brightness, helps create a consistent and calming bedtime routine. We’ve found it significantly contributes to everyone in the house sleeping better, providing a peaceful backdrop that blocks out household noises and signals to Jett that it’s time to rest.
The Ollie Swaddle. Swaddling is a topic that often elicits varied opinions among parents, but for us, it was a game-changer during Jett’s newborn phase (always ensuring he was not yet rolling over, per safe sleep guidelines). We tried several different swaddles, but The Ollie Swaddle quickly became our undeniable favorite. Its unique design features a custom sizing fit, meaning you only need one size from birth until your baby is ready to transition out of swaddling. My skepticism quickly vanished after witnessing its effectiveness firsthand. This small, portable sound machine works wonders in soothing a fussy baby by using a rhythmic shushing sound that mimics the sounds babies hear in the womb. For those moments when Jett was really resisting sleep, combining the gentle rain sound from our Hatch Rest with the focused shushing of the Baby Shusher proved to be a powerful duo, helping him settle down and drift off to sleep much faster. It’s truly one of those unexpected baby products that became a treasured tool in our sleep arsenal.
Eufy Baby Monitor. Choosing a reliable baby monitor is essential for peace of mind, and the Eufy Baby Monitor has consistently delivered. Our primary reason for selecting this model was its non-wifi functionality. In an age where everything is connected, we appreciated the added layer of security and privacy that comes with a local connection, eliminating any concerns about internet vulnerabilities. Beyond that, its performance has been exceptional. The crystal-clear night vision ensures we can see Jett clearly even in a completely dark room, and the extended range allows us to move freely around the house or yard without losing connection. It’s user-friendly, reliable, and provides exactly what we need to keep an eye on our little one.
Fisher-Price Bassinet. For the first several months, having Jett sleep in our room in a bassinet was absolutely essential, especially since he is exclusively breastfed and I don’t typically offer many bottles. Initially, Daniel and I rented the popular Snoo bassinet, having heard glowing reviews about its ability to soothe babies to sleep. While it had its moments, Jett surprisingly started sleeping long stretches around six weeks, which made us question the monthly expense of the Snoo. We decided to “downgrade” to this simple yet highly effective Fisher-Price bassinet, and it has been perfect for our needs. A critical feature for me was the mesh-sided design, as Jett is quite a squirmy sleeper and can sometimes maneuver himself close to the edges. This bassinet offers optimal breathability and visibility, ensuring his safety and my peace of mind. As he grows, our plan is to smoothly transition him into his own crib, but for now, this bassinet has been a wonderful bedside companion.
Snuza Movement Monitor.While not an absolute necessity for every parent, the Snuza movement monitor has been invaluable for giving us an extra layer of peace of mind during those early, anxious weeks. Many parents gravitate towards the Owlet Smart Sock, which tracks breathing and heart rate via Wi-Fi. However, we were deterred by both its higher price tag and our preference to avoid Wi-Fi dependent devices for continuous monitoring. The Snuza offered a fantastic alternative: it’s battery-powered, clips directly onto the baby’s diaper, and monitors abdominal movement. If no movement is detected for a certain period, it gently vibrates to rouse the baby, and then alarms if movement doesn’t resume. We actually found ours unopened at a baby consignment store for less than half the retail price, making it an even more practical and comforting investment without breaking the bank.
Nourishing Your Little One: Essential Nursing Tools
The journey of breastfeeding is deeply personal and unique for every mother and baby. For me, these products provided crucial support, comfort, and efficiency, especially during the initial learning phase and throughout our continued nursing relationship.
Spectra Pump. Full disclosure: I don’t pump extensively. Early on, I had an oversupply issue and worked with a lactation consultant who advised me to reduce pumping to regulate my supply. Since I work from home, I don’t have the daily need for a large freezer stash, nor have I faced significant supply challenges after that initial period. However, for the times I do need to pump, the Spectra pump has been incredibly reliable and efficient. I appreciate its quiet operation, comfort, and ease of use. It’s powerful yet gentle, making pumping sessions as comfortable as possible. It has consistently performed without any issues, making it a trustworthy choice for occasional pumping or for mothers who need to pump more regularly.
My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow. In the early days of breastfeeding, both Jett and I were learning the ropes, and achieving a comfortable, effective latch was often a challenge. That’s where the My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow became an indispensable aid. Its wrap-around design and firm, flat surface positioned Jett at the perfect height, reducing strain on my back and arms and allowing me to focus on his latch. It truly supported proper positioning, which is crucial for successful breastfeeding, especially for new moms. Now that we’re both much more comfortable and skilled with nursing, we don’t rely on it as much, but for establishing that initial comfortable connection, it was absolutely invaluable and I recommend it to any new nursing mother.
Haakaa Breast Pump.The Haakaa is another fantastic product that played a significant role in my early nursing journey, though I also took a break from it when managing oversupply. This ingenious little device is a silicone breast pump that uses gentle suction to collect let-down milk from one breast while you nurse on the other. It’s completely hands-free and incredibly efficient. In those initial weeks, before my supply fully regulated, I was able to build a surprisingly substantial freezer stash purely from the milk caught by the Haakaa – milk that would have otherwise been wasted. It’s an amazing, natural way to collect extra milk without any electrical components or complicated parts, making it perfect for both building a stash and preventing leaks.
Burp cloths. If there’s one item you truly can never have enough of with a newborn, it’s burp cloths. Babies spit up, drool, and make messes in myriad ways, and having a stack of clean burp cloths within arm’s reach at all times is absolutely essential. We keep them in every room, in the diaper bag, and near every feeding station. Opt for soft, absorbent ones, and trust me, you’ll be cycling through them faster than you expect!
True & Co Bras. While specialized nursing bras are popular, I found an unexpected favorite in True & Co bras. Since I don’t pump daily, I didn’t need a dedicated pumping bra, and many traditional nursing bras felt less comfortable or supportive than my pre-baby options. True & Co bras are incredibly soft, stretchy, and offer excellent comfort. Crucially, they are designed in a way that makes them easy to pull down for nursing access, making them a perfectly functional and much more comfortable alternative for me. I’m still happily wearing the styles I loved before Jett arrived, proving that sometimes, versatility and comfort can trump specialized design.

Venturing out with a newborn, whether it’s for a walk around the neighborhood or a trip to the grocery store, requires a few key pieces of gear to ensure comfort and convenience for both parent and baby. These items made our excursions seamless.
Graco Stroller & Car Seat Travel System. A reliable travel system is a non-negotiable for new parents, and we absolutely love the Graco Modes 3 Lite DLX. Its biggest draw is the incredible ease and convenience it offers. The seamless transition from car to stroller is a dream – simply unclip the car seat from its base in the car and click it securely into the stroller frame. This means less disturbance for a sleeping baby and a much smoother setup when you’re out and about. The stroller itself is lightweight and maneuvers easily, making walks and errands much more enjoyable. It’s designed to grow with your child, offering multiple configurations, making it a smart long-term investment for family adventures.
Solly Baby Wrap. This has to be one of my all-time favorite baby items, period. While Texas summers mean I don’t typically wear Jett outside for extended periods, I use this wrap virtually every day around the house. Jett absolutely loves being close to me, observing the world from my perspective as I go about my tasks. The Solly Baby Wrap allows me to keep him snug and secure, hands-free, which is incredibly liberating when I need to get things done, from cooking to tidying up. The fabric is incredibly soft, breathable, and supportive, making it comfortable for both of us. The bonding aspect of babywearing is also truly special. In fact, I love it so much I have two – one for use and one as a backup, because Jett loves to slobber on it, and I never want to be without a clean one!

Diaper changes are a constant part of newborn life, and having the right tools can make this frequent task quicker, cleaner, and more efficient. Here are our top picks for diapering.
Andy Pandy Diapers. From the outset, Daniel and I decided that cloth diapering, while admirable, wasn’t the right fit for our lifestyle. After trying a few different disposable diaper brands, Andy Pandy quickly emerged as our clear favorite. My best friend sent us a pack when Jett was born, and we’ve been using them ever since. While they initially ran a bit large, their exceptional softness and the convenient wetness indicator line made them stand out. They are gentle on Jett’s sensitive skin and provide excellent leak protection. They also offer a more eco-conscious choice among disposable options, which aligns with our values. We genuinely haven’t looked back since discovering them.
Bumbo Changing Pad. Oh, how happy I am that we invested in the Bumbo Changing Pad! Placed atop Jett’s changing table, it has made the frequent (and often messy) task of diaper changes significantly easier to manage. Its smooth, waterproof surface wipes clean in seconds, which is an absolute blessing when Jett inevitably decides to pee mid-change! It’s also soft and contoured, providing a comfortable and secure spot for baby during changes, ensuring he stays put and preventing rolls. This pad has saved us countless times and made cleanup a breeze.
Ubbi Diaper Pail. A good diaper pail is essential for keeping nursery odors at bay, and the Ubbi Diaper Pail truly excels at this. Angel Care Bath Support. Our home isn’t equipped with a sink that’s ideal for safely bathing a newborn, so the Angel Care Bath Support has been our perfect solution. We use it directly in the bathtub, and it cradles Jett perfectly, keeping him secure and comfortable during his baths. Its ergonomic design allows for easy draining and drying, and the soft-touch material is gentle on his skin. We don’t bathe Jett with soap every day – typically only 2-3 times a week – to protect his delicate skin barrier. For those times when soap is needed, the Beauty Counter Baby Gentle All-Over Wash has been fantastic. Activity Gym. While Jett often enjoys simple play on a blanket, an activity gym is excellent for capturing his attention and encouraging early development. Our space-themed activity gym offers a variety of hanging toys, textures, and sounds that stimulate his senses. It’s perfect for encouraging reaching, batting, and visual tracking, providing a safe and engaging space for him to play independently for short periods. It also makes tummy time more interesting, as he can focus on the dangling toys and mirror.
Tummy Time Playboard. Tummy time is crucial for developing neck and core strength, but it can sometimes be a challenge to keep babies engaged. This Tummy Time Playboard has been our go-to newborn toy for mental stimulation. Jett absolutely loves the high-contrast art cards, which are fantastic for his developing vision, and he’s captivated by the mirror, gazing at his own reflection. It provides visual interest and encourages him to lift his head, making tummy time more productive and enjoyable for both of us.
Bibs Pacifiers. Like many new parents, we initially had concerns about “nipple confusion” and how pacifier use might interfere with breastfeeding. Kyte Baby Clothes. Without a doubt, Kyte Baby is my favorite brand for baby clothes. Personally, I gravitate away from baby clothes with excessive prints or words, as they can be challenging to mix and match, especially when babies are constantly getting dirty. Kyte Baby offers an extensive range of solid colors across all its styles, which I absolutely adore for creating versatile outfits. Beyond aesthetics, the quality is exceptional: their bamboo fabric is incredibly soft, wonderfully stretchy, and remarkably easy to put on and take off. Jett, like many babies, dislikes tight or uncomfortable clothing that has to be pulled over his head, so their rompers have become a daily favorite for both of us. The ease of dressing combined with ultimate comfort makes them perfect for everyday wear. As a bonus, their women’s shirts are also my top pick for nursing comfort.
Oliver & Rain. Another fantastic brand that has won us over is Oliver & Rain. They offer super cute, stylish clothes that are just as soft and comfortable for Jett to wear. I’m particularly fond of their joggers – they’re easy to move in, look adorable, and are perfect for both playtime and naptime. In the digital age, technology can be a powerful ally for new parents. These apps offered invaluable support, guidance, and organization during Jett’s first months.
Huckleberry. The Huckleberry app quickly became an indispensable tool for tracking Jett’s sleep, feeding schedules, and diaper changes. In those initial weeks and months, when you’re trying to decipher your baby’s patterns and predict their needs, comprehensive tracking can be incredibly helpful. What truly elevates Huckleberry is its “SweetSpot®” feature, which uses predictive algorithms to offer smart suggestions for when to put your baby down for a nap or bedtime. This took so much guesswork out of our day-to-day routine, helping us establish a more predictable schedule and ensuring Jett got the rest he needed.
