From the bustling streets of Long Island, New York, to the sprawling landscapes of Dallas, Texas, my life has taken quite an unexpected turn. As a proud New Yorker, I never envisioned myself settling down so far from home. Yet, here I am, firmly planted in Dallas, a city that has slowly but surely captured my heart. The journey from my New York upbringing to my current life in Texas involved college, marriage to a true Texan, and the realization of a significant disparity in the cost of living between New York City and Dallas – a factor that certainly sweetened the deal for staying put. While Dallas has become home, a deep love for the vibrant energy of New York City still resides within me.
So, when the opportunity arose for a family trip to NYC, combining a visit to see my brother perform in a Broadway play with the chance to introduce my husband to my childhood roots, I was absolutely thrilled. It was the perfect excuse to dive back into the city that never sleeps, explore its iconic landmarks, indulge in its diverse culinary scene, and revisit the places that shaped me. This trip was more than just a vacation; it was a journey back to where it all began, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved city through the eyes of both a former resident and a new visitor.
I am beyond excited to share a comprehensive recap of our New York City adventure, covering everything from exceptional restaurants and must-do activities to unique shopping experiences. Get ready to explore the heart of NYC with me, especially through a health-conscious lens!
Let’s kick off this vibrant travel story with what truly fuels any great city experience: the food scene.
A Paleo Foodie’s Guide to Dining in New York City
New York City is a marvel for countless reasons—its breathtaking skyline, its rich tapestry of cultures, and, undoubtedly, its unparalleled food landscape. Growing up, my palate was unapologetically fond of gluten and sugar. This recent trip marked my first time experiencing NYC as a truly “Paleo” eater, armed with a clear understanding of my food intolerances. And let me tell you, the city delivered! New York boasts an incredible array of options for those seeking real, wholesome food, and even with just two days, I managed to uncover some truly outstanding culinary gems that cater to a clean eating lifestyle.
Springbone Kitchen: A Paleo Paradise
Springbone Kitchen was unequivocally at the top of my must-visit list, and it surpassed all expectations. For those familiar with Austin’s healthy food scene, think of it as NYC’s equivalent of Picnik—a true haven for nutritious and delicious food. They are renowned for their house-made bone broth, invigorating smoothies, and an expansive menu thoughtfully designed with allergen-friendly options. What truly sets Springbone apart, and made it an instant favorite, is their unwavering commitment to cooking with high-quality, healthy fats like coconut oil and beef tallow.
In today’s dining landscape, avoiding inflammatory seed oils such as canola and soybean oil can be an immense challenge. These oils often leave me feeling sluggish and unwell, making it crucial to find establishments that prioritize healthier alternatives. At Springbone Kitchen, this was never a concern. It was a refreshing change to dine out with complete peace of mind, knowing every ingredient was chosen with wellness in mind.
On both of my visits, I indulged in their grass-fed burger, nestled in a fantastic paleo bun sourced from Know Foods. The burger was topped with a creamy, nightshade-free guacamole, onions caramelized to perfection in beef tallow, and a generous side of carrot fries, also deliciously fried in tallow. Each bite was a testament to how flavorful and satisfying healthy eating can be. This meal wasn’t just good; it was easily one of the most delightful and wholesome dining experiences I’ve had in a very long time.

Dig Inn: Farm-to-Table Fast Casual
Dig Inn has been aptly described as “Chipotle for yuppies,” a description that perfectly captures its essence. It’s a fast-casual dining experience that prioritizes quality, offering a fresh take on quick, healthy meals with numerous locations scattered across the city. What truly elevates Dig Inn beyond typical fast food is their dedication to using higher-quality cooking oils, specifically coconut and olive oil, ensuring a healthier and more flavorful meal.

During my visit, I opted for a customized bowl built upon a generous bed of fresh greens, adorned with crisp apples, perfectly roasted carrots, and succulent salmon. My husband and I both enjoyed these wholesome bowls, and the total cost for two was a mere $25. In New York City, where dining expenses can quickly add up, finding such a delicious and nutritious meal at such an incredible value truly felt like a steal.
Pressed Juicery: A Dairy-Free Dream
No trip focused on health and wellness would be complete without a stop at Pressed Juicery. This popular juice shop is celebrated for its incredible “Pressed Freeze”—a dairy-free alternative to traditional frozen yogurt. I had been eagerly anticipating trying this for so long, and it was absolutely worth the wait! The freeze is crafted from frozen juices, creamy almond milk, and sweetened naturally with dates, creating a guilt-free indulgence that is both refreshing and satisfying.
I chose a decadent chocolate freeze, piled high with fresh berries, toasted coconut flakes, and a luscious almond butter drizzle. Each spoonful was a delightful blend of textures and flavors, proving that healthy treats can be incredibly delicious. My only wish? That they would open a location in Texas so I could enjoy this dairy-free delight more regularly!

Other Paleo-Friendly Restaurants on My NYC Wishlist
Even with careful planning, it’s impossible to visit every place on your list in a short trip. Here are a couple of other highly-rated paleo-friendly spots I hope to explore on my next visit to New York:
Hu Kitchen
It’s hard to believe I didn’t get the chance to visit Hu Kitchen on this trip! This establishment is a consistent favorite within the paleo and wellness community, celebrated for its extensive menu of grain-free and dairy-free options. From savory dishes to sweet treats, Hu Kitchen is known for its commitment to real, unprocessed ingredients. It remains a top priority for my next NYC culinary adventure.
The Little Beet
The Little Beet was another frequent recommendation from friends and fellow clean eaters. Known for its fresh, vibrant, and health-conscious menu, it’s a popular choice for those seeking nutritious and delicious meals in a casual setting. I’m eager to experience their offerings firsthand on a future visit.
Exploring the Best of New York City: Attractions & Experiences
Beyond its culinary delights, New York City offers an endless array of experiences. While the sheer intensity of the city can sometimes be overwhelming—a feeling that I’ve noticed has grown since my move to the comparatively calmer pace of Texas—we strategically planned our activities to make the most of our time, balancing iconic sights with more personal explorations.
Broadway Theatre: A Magical Night
A trip to New York City for me simply isn’t complete without experiencing the magic of Broadway. Having never seen the iconic musical Wicked, I knew immediately that it had to be on our itinerary. The Gershwin Theatre provided a magnificent setting, and even from our seats in the Mezzanine, the view was superb, and the energy was electric. The performance was everything I had hoped for—captivating, emotional, and truly unforgettable. I wholeheartedly recommend making the splurge for a Broadway show if you find yourself in New York; it’s an unparalleled cultural experience that creates lasting memories.
Sightseeing and Neighborhood Exploration
While the hustle and bustle of Manhattan can be exhilarating, we chose to focus a significant portion of our sightseeing energy on the vibrant and dynamic boroughs of Brooklyn and Williamsburg. This decision proved to be time incredibly well spent. Brooklyn, in particular, has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into a sophisticated yet bohemian “hipster dreamland.” It’s a treasure trove filled with innovative restaurants, charming vintage shops, and an inspiring array of street art and galleries. We spent hours simply strolling through its tree-lined streets, soaking in the unique atmosphere and discovering hidden gems around every corner. For anyone visiting NYC, carve out ample time to wander through these neighborhoods; you will undoubtedly be rewarded with an authentic and unforgettable experience.
Museums: A Poignant Visit
Having recently visited Washington D.C. with a friend, I felt a slight “museum fatigue,” so we decided to forgo some of the larger, more traditional museums this time around. However, there was one museum we absolutely had to visit: the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. This experience was incredibly powerful, deeply moving, and profoundly heartbreaking. As someone who was in New York on September 11th, 2001, the museum brought back a flood of raw emotions and memories. The carefully curated exhibits, personal stories, and solemn atmosphere created an intensely poignant experience, leading to many tears throughout our visit. It’s a testament to resilience and remembrance, and a vital place for reflection and understanding.
A Day Trip to Long Island: Revisiting Childhood Roots
Our lodging in Kew Gardens, near Jamaica, placed us just an hour’s drive from my hometown of Hauppauge on Long Island. It was imperative that I show my husband where I grew up, allowing him to visualize my childhood stories. So, we rented a car for the day and embarked on a nostalgic journey. We drove through familiar streets, past my childhood home, and made a stop at the iconic Jones Beach, even though it was a brisk day. Though it was a brief excursion, the joy of sharing my old stomping grounds and the cherished memories tied to them with my husband was immense and deeply fulfilling.
Connecting with Family
One of the most heartwarming aspects of our trip was the opportunity to reconnect with my extended family. Virtually all of my relatives reside in New York, and catching up with them was a non-negotiable part of our visit. Having not seen many of them since my wedding two years prior, it was wonderful to share stories, laughter, and simply enjoy each other’s company. These moments of familial connection truly enriched our entire New York experience.
Vintage Treasures & Unique Finds in NYC
For those who follow me on Instagram, you’re likely aware of my unique fashion quirk: a deep adoration for authentic vintage clothing, particularly from the 1960s and 70s (when I’m not in my usual nutrition nerd sweatshirt and yoga pants!). I had high hopes that New York City, with its reputation for style and history, would be the ultimate destination for vintage shopping. I dedicated considerable time to researching various shops, yet I must admit, I wasn’t entirely blown away by some of my initial discoveries. New York is undeniably expensive, and many of the vintage stores I visited tended to stock more 80s and 90s fashion, which, while interesting, isn’t quite my preferred era.
Awoke Vintage: A Williamsburg Gem
Despite some initial misses, my absolute favorite find was Awoke Vintage in Williamsburg. While not every piece was strictly authentic vintage, the shop boasted an incredible selection of truly unique items and genuinely fantastic vintage finds. Their curated collection offered a refreshing blend of styles that resonated much more with my personal aesthetic. Awoke Vintage also maintains a vibrant online presence and frequently updates their Instagram with new arrivals, so be sure to give them a follow for a constant dose of vintage inspiration!
Feng Sway: Where Fashion Meets Flora
Feng Sway presented a concept so unique, it felt like a dream: a vintage clothing store coexisting with an exotic plant shop. This intriguing combination truly made me pinch myself. It’s the kind of wonderfully eccentric and innovative retail experience that you simply cannot find in Dallas. Browsing through beautiful, hand-picked vintage garments amidst a lush, vibrant jungle of exotic plants was an absolute delight for the senses, creating an unforgettable shopping experience that transcended the typical retail outing.

Our family trip to New York City was truly exceptional, filled with delicious food, meaningful experiences, and exciting discoveries. From revisiting my old haunts on Long Island to savoring paleo-friendly meals and exploring unique vintage shops, every moment was cherished. The city’s energy and charm never cease to amaze me, and I’m already eagerly anticipating my next visit. New York City truly has something for everyone, and I hope this recap inspires your own adventures.
